We respond to artists’ needs, support new thinking in the sector, and informs CAN‘s work, while training, upskilling and amplifying underrepresented voices in Manchester and the UK cultural workforce.
Placements
Placements offer emerging artists and creatives the opportunity to develop their practice through hands-on experience in arts, migration and socially engaged practice.
You’ll gain practical experience working with young people and communities, alongside mentoring and support from CAN‘s experienced team, helping you build the skills and confidence to take the next step in your creative career.
“CAN has taught me so much about community arts. I’ve grown in confidence, had the chance to try new things in a safe space, and gained experience that I can take into my own future practice.”
Anna Ellison, Student Placement, 2025

Sector Development
This strand focuses on developing the skills and confidence of CAN‘s staff, artists, volunteers and freelancers to deliver high-quality work. Alongside this, we share CAN‘s experience, learning and creative approaches through partnerships, networks and advocacy, strengthening our role within the wider cultural sector.
“Having a sounding board with someone who is not involved as a stakeholder, the viewpoint of a creative producer and tailored support has been really useful. I will really miss having an outside eye on the project.”
Ruth Flannagan, Cartwheel Arts Mentorship, 2025
