Our innovative project CAN Do Creatives, funded by the European Social Fund, culminated with a showcase and networking event at Manchester’s St Thomas Centre on 10 March.
The event celebrated the achievements of 13 artists, who work in art forms ranging from performance to photography through to visual art, who completed the 6 month-long course which took them on a journey through everything they need to know to grow a successful career or business in the art, cultural, heritage, and creative industries sectors. Some artists were new to the sector, developing a career in the UK or returning to their careers in the sector.
“I have gained so much from the course. The video compilation helped to break the ice. It was great to experience an event like that and take part. Thanks for all the hard work and support you guys have given to us all.”

The concept behind the event was to introduce CAN Do Creatives to organisations and producers from Greater Manchester.
We welcomed a range of arts and education organisations including The Whitworth, Manchester City of Literature, Cartwheel Arts, MIF, Skylight Circus Arts,Brighter Sound and our funding partner WEA.
The showcase featured music as well as stalls where artists could show guests their work.
Shirlaine Forrest, CAN’s photographer, was on hand to document the event.
Career Success
We also caught up with some of last year’s CAN Do Creatives and it was great to hear about what they’ve been up to.
Amongst the achievements of the current group, CAN DoCreatives artist, Molly Major is already going on to do great things having secured paid work running creative workshops and a number of visual art commissions. We’re looking forward to seeing what the CAN Do artists go on to do next.
Katherine Rogers from Community Arts North West, who’s managed the project, was delighted with the event.
“We had an impressive show of support for the CAN Do Creatives from Greater Manchester’s fabulous arts sector! It was really great to see people in person again and some great connections were made which is sure to make a difference to the careers of the artists. Many thanks to everyone who joined us!”
Building networks
Organisations attending welcomed the opportunity to meet our CAN Do Creatives and to grow their own networks.
