CAN and HOME are delighted to announce news of two artist commissions – one for a visual artist and one for a documentary filmmaker – which will feature in June 2025’s Horizons Festival
Both opportunities are for Greater Manchester-based artists or filmmakers who have experienced displacement from their home country or are seeking sanctuary through the UK asylum system.
To apply, you must be 18 or older and have the right to work in the UK.
The commissions invite artists/filmmakers to respond to the Horizons Festival 2025’s theme of More In Common.
CAN and HOME encourage artists /filmmakers to use our explanation of the theme as a guideline and welcome their interpretation.
The information about both commissions provides more detail about the theme and the festival’s values.

The artwork can be created in any 2D medium, including illustration, painting, drawing, printmaking, digital illustration, photography and collage.
Once submitted to HOME, the original artwork will be photographed, digitally enlarged, printed on large-scale vinyl, and installed in a prominent position outside of HOME. It will then be showcased at HOME for eight weeks.
Your artwork will be accompanied by either a panel discussion, a Q&A session or an introduction to contextualise your work.
The successful visual artist will receive:
- £1000 of funding (£500 in April, £500 in June)
- Advice and support from HOME’s Creative Development Practitioner during production in the form of regular meetings and technical support
- Installation of the artwork by HOME
- Promotion and marketing of the artwork on HOME’s website and social media
- Artwork exhibited at HOME for up to eight weeks
The closing date for submission is Monday 10 February at 12 noon.
The Horizons Festival 2025 Short Documentary Film Commission
The short documentary film commission offers the opportunity for a filmmaker to create a short documentary film (maximum 20 minutes) that showcases the Arts and Migration Group.
For more information about the group, click here.
This group of artists comes together each year to curate Horizons Festival.
The film will explore the work of individual artists who are part of the group, their creative experiences, artistic practices and how they work together as a collective.
The documentary needs to include an interview with several artists from the group, a ‘Day in the life’ style footage of the artists working and creating, interviews with the festival producers at CAN and HOME, and a narrative thread tying the film together, which can be curated by the filmmaker.
The successful documentary filmmaker will receive the following:
- £1000 of funding (£500 in April, £500 in June)
- Two – four days of advice and support from HOME’s Creative Development Practitioner during production in the form of regular meetings and executive producing support
- The loan of filmmaking equipment from HOME
- A screening at HOME’s Cinema on Sunday 15 June 2025
